Made in the UK- is the current buzz word. It is a well respected label around the world but does it make any difference?
As a business owner I have tried India, the quality was sometimes questionable and it was to far to travel to often, I was rejected by Portugal when the economic crisis took hold and small factories shut leaving those of us with smaller production runs abandoned, and now the UK. I love that I can pop on a train and visit the factory and deal with any issues, that orders can leave there in the evening and be with me the next morning, I love that we speak the same language and I love the pride in providing jobs in my own country.
The problem arises when there are very few factories remaining, the ones that still exist are often small, or overburdened by too much work or not always keen to work with small business. The lack of choice means if you want to keep manufacturing in the UK they have the upper hand, the can be slow, and expensive and you can do nothing but take your production abroad again.
Is the quality that much better? I can't be sure but I hope so.
We love our factory and the bags they produce are brilliant but for some of the other products they cannot really produce them economically and when they have a ceiling price and value you are forced abroad.
If the government want to help our GDP then help our factories, help them to buy equipment that will give them the edge they need to make our production competitive.
Why open my soul?
This blog lets you go behind the scenes of my company étoile home and what it is like to run a small business and what inspires my to keep going and creating things for you to enjoy in your home.
